We hosted the Huron League Championships this weekend. Milan Took the win to continue our streak of 26 straight Huron League Championships. Milan 588 Grosse Ile 432 Riverview 428 Flat Rock 410 New Boston Huron/Taylor 148 Monroe SMCC 136 We won 9 of the 12 events, and accomplished over 30 best times and splits on the weekend. Winners included. Medley Relay of Afton Presley, Mary Kate Wayne, Avery Hovatter and Kelsie Gillay Lila McKenna took the 200 Free Kaylin Brown won Diving Mary Kate Waye also won both the 100 Fly and 100 Breast Evelyn Gill won the 500 The 200 Free Relay was won by Gillay, Hovatter, McKenna and Gill The 400 relay was won by Wayne. Hovatter, Mckenna and Gill. This was a total team effort as we won due to our depth. We scored multiple athletes in every event. We make it a priority to win our league. That is a goal on day 1 of our season. The real power of our team is the willingness for athletes to do what their team needs. This was shown this weekend as we had athletes who swam races where we needed points, not always the races they wanted. In addition our depth prevailed over other teams. This is a testament to having athletes, who work to get better all year, and be able to contribute. Less ME and more WE. Our B medley took 4th with a great race. Bri Pumfrey, Tori Kimberly, Sar Mitchell and Virginia Heikka. In the 200 Free, Lila Mckenna took the win, but that was only after an incredible race with her training partner and team mate Evelyn Gill. Gill took a close 2nd to rack up more points for the Big Reds, and freshman Cristina Wilson had a great weekend and race to finish 14th to score. In the 200 IM Emma Brown swam to 16th to score for Milan, and Delany Didyk was 13th to put up more points. In the A final Sara Maitchell and Afton Presley fought hard to claim 2nd and 3rd respectively. The 50 Free saw lifetime bests from many as Violet Wellington, Lyric Lowry, Zoie Devine all swam great. Peyton Bersgstrom took 23rd, Hazel Gibbs was 17th. Scoring for Milan was Virginia Heikka in 11th in a season best, Kenleigh Vandergrift had a great swim to finish 8th, Tori Kimberly was lights out all weekend and took 5th, while Kelsie Gillay had a lifetime best to claim runner up in the event. In the 100 Fly, Wayne State Commit Mary Kate Wayne took the gold, with Avery Hovatter in 4th with a fantastic swim and Senior Bri Pumfrey flexed our depth with an 8th place finish in the event. This is an example of our formula to success, as we scored 3 girls in the top 8 of the event. The 100 free was another great event for Milan. Wellington, and Lowry had best times. Gibba and Didyk scored points for Milan taking 13t and 14th, Virginia Heikka dropped almost 2 seconds for prelims to final to win the consolation final and take 9th, and Vandergrift continued her great weekend with a 4th place showing and a lifetime best. The 500 Free saw Gill take the win, followed closely by Lila Mckenna in 2nd, Pumfrey was 7th, and Cristina Wilson was 10th. Another event where we scored 3 in the top 8 and 4 total in an event. The 200 Free Relay win by our A group was a fantastic swim by all four girls, while the B relay of Kimberly, Heikka, Vandergift and Wilson took 4th. All four B relay athletes were excellent and Wilson stepped up to fill in for Finals due to illness of a swimmer and shined bright. Our C relay swam very well, as Gibbs Didyk, Pumfrey and Lowry were all incredible. In the 100 back Peyton Bergstrom had an incredible last race ever to move up to 10th and score. In the A final Presley and Mitchell switched their places from the 200 IM to take 2,3 and Milan scored 30 points in the event overall. The 100 breast was a dominant event for Milan as we scored 4 athletes, and swept the top 3 places. Emma Brown swam to 10th. Mary Kate Wayne took the top spot for the 4th straight year, Kelsie Gillay dropped another second from prelims to finals to claim 2nd and Tori Kimberly had a great weekend and great swim to claim 3rd. The meet ended with another Milan win, as our A group took 1st, and our B relay of Cristina Wilson filling in again, Sara Mitchell, Afton Presley, and Kenleigh Vandergrift took 4th. The C relay of Emma Brown who filled in for Wilson who moved up to the B relay, along with Hazel Gibbs, Lowry and Devine all swam great to finish 13th. It was an incredible weekend of Swimming and Diving for Milan. The passion and energy was great and the girls responded to the challenge to extend our streak of Huron League Championships. I also want to thank all the people who volunteered to help run our meet, as we can not run a large meet without lots of help. Thanks for your support of our program. Coach Heikka
